Idalopirdine, a drug designed to cure the memory-depleting disease, failed to reduce any measurable cognitive declines, according to a study labeled Starshine.
Fox News reports that Idalopirdine is developed along with Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, a Japan-based company, and was administered to various patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. The drug failed to meet the secondary goals of the study as well.
“We are disappointed about the outcome of this study,” said Dr. Anders Gersel Pedersen, Chief Scientific Officer at Lundbeck. “The phase II data were very encouraging but unfortunately, these data failed to replicate those findings.”
According to Reuters, after the initial report of the drug failure, another company, Axovant Sciences Ltd, which is developing another drug, saw their shares decrease by 14%.
